This is yet another unusual house built in Oak Crest. It is round and sits on a heavily wooded lot at the corner of Idlewild and Friendship. It is quite small and not really big enough for a family.

This house has always been well kept. It has seen several changes through the years.

According to a previous owner, this house once belonged to DeParx Stimpson (121 Idlewild). It also used to face Friendship Cr. Mr Stimpson had the house moved (turned) so that it faced Idlewild. I am not quite sure why the house was moved. Mr Stimpson purchased the house in Febuary 1950 and split the lot up. He sold the portion with the house to Ruby Davis Moran in December 1950. He kept the portion of the lot next to his house at 121 Idlewild. My guess is so that he could add the double garage to his house. I will investigate some more to see if I can get the full story.

The changes that I can remember are the addition on the left side of the house (the bay window area). Also, there was a small single car garage behind the house which has now been expanded to a two car garage with a bonus room above it.

This house was built in 1938. From what I have been told, it used to look much different. It was modified to its present day appearance by long time owner DeParx Stimpson, who purchased this house in 1940. He was a local engineer and the inventor of the heat pump. Thats right, he made a fortune from his invention which is widely used in construction today. He experimented a lot right here on this house. He also assisted NASA in making cooling systems for rocket boosters.

So, more than likely, this house was the first house to ever have a heat pump. I have even been told that he had seven wells at this house. Wow, if these walls could talk, I bet they could tell quite a great story.

When I was growing up the Stimpson's had a trampoline in their back yard. Mr Stimpson gave us children in the neighborhood permission to jump on the trampoline whenever we wanted to. Needless to say I spent a lot of time bouncing around in this back yard.

More later…..

In addition to Eleanor Lyon’s Oak Crest Florist, there was another neighborhood florist that got its start much earlier. In August 1937, Rachel and Phillip (Phil) Kivett purchased a lot at 134 Idlewild Dr and then built a small house on it in 1941. The house sat way back off the street and was very small. It only had a living room, kitchen, bedroom and a bathroom.

Later (I am not sure exactly what year) the Kivett’s built a flower shop beside the house and opened Kivett’s Florist. The shop was actually larger than their little house. Mr and Mrs Kivett both ran the florist together. It was a full service florist, catering to weddings, funerals, dances, and other special occasions. They also sold special gifts in the shop as well, such as christmas ornaments.

Many neighbors and nearby residents patronized Kivett’s Florist. Marcia Weatherly Barnes, who grew up in the area on Long Dr, recalls visiting the florist when she was a little girl with her mother and brother, Royce. Marcia and Royce always looked forward to picking out a christmas ornament for their tree each year.

The Kivetts would also host an annual Holiday Open House. Polly Crater would always assist with the open house. Mrs Crater lived across the street at 127 Idlewild Dr and was also the first resident to build and live on the street……and lived here for over seventy years, passing away at age 98.

At some point the Kivetts added a large family room on to the back of their house. Eventually, in the late 1970’s they closed the florist, sold the property, and moved to the mountains. They have since passed away.

Martha Martinat purchased the property from the Kivetts in October 1978. She eventually built another addition that connected the house and the flower shop. Then in 1989 she sold the property to her daughter, Karen. Since then, it has been sold a couple of times. In the most recent years it has been a rental house. Currently, it is vacant with a sale pending.

This house was built by S E and Zelda Reid Taylor. Mrs Taylor is a sister to Gladys Reid Dunnigan who built the house at 175 Idlewild Dr in 1938 and then later built the house at 222 Friendship Cr.
