00 ~ friendship cr ~59 viewsThis was the only side street in Oak Crest when it was first developed in June 1923 by J W, F H, and H E Fries . Maybe the name was derived from their name (FRIEs ~ FRIEndship). Lets face it, Fries Circle would not have sounded very attractive. So, the name Friendship was chosen to imply “a community of friends.”

The Poindexters built their house in 1957. They purchased the lot in 1952 from Paul & Ruby Hauser, Poindexter’s aunt and uncle. They moved into their new home from the small house they rented from the Hauser’s at 1141 Polo Rd. The Hauser’s built that little house for the newlywed couple in 1948. Although the Hauser’s house on Polo was demolished in 2013, the small house and original two-car garage still remain.

Later owners, Shane and Kathleen Dubois moved into this house from 124 Rosedale Cr in 2005. Then they moved from this house to 174 Idlewild Dr in 2008, where they currently live. Kathleen’s parents, Aubrey and Priscilla Quinn live next door at 170 Idlewild Dr.

This charming cottage style house has quite an interesting history. It is also one of my favorite houses in OC. John and Bertha Charles built it in 1938. Mr Charles was a hardwood floor refinisher.

The Charles's tried to have children, but were unsuccessful after a couple of miscarriages. Then, in the early 1940's Mr Charles became ill and died suddenly. This was devastating to Mrs Charles and she became very reclusive from that point on.

She never made any changes to the house after her husband's death. The house became frozen in time.

Mrs Charles became very anti-social and would not allow any visitors to her home. She would chase anyone off who trespassed on her property. In fact, I was chased away a few times myself as a child. It got to the point that neighbors avoided her and their children were not allowed anywhere near her house. Everyone in the neighborhood called her "Old Lady Charles."

Mrs Charles worked in the cafeteria at WF College for many years. I heard that the students just loved her. Whenever she was out in public she could be very nice. My mother used to talk to her all the time at the beauty shop and said she was really nice. But she was a different person on her turf!

Her neice is married to my cousin. She told me that her aunt was nice, but kept very much to herself. Whenever they would take her places, they were never allowed in her house. Instead, she would come out to their car and never invited them in her house.

It wasn't until Mrs Charles could no longer look after herself and had to be put into a nursing home that anyone knew how she lived. She kept everything. And I do mean everything. Newspapers, magazines, jars, containers, etc. She never threw anything out. She did keep everything in a neat and orderly fashion, although there was so much of it that there were only small pathways through the house. She also had no running water in the house for years. So, how she survived like that is a mystery to everyone.

It's really quite sad. In my opinion she must have became that way because of the terrible losses she suffered at such and young age and so early in her marriage. I suppose that her life ended back then also, and that is why she never moved forward or made any changes in her life or her way of living.

After her house was cleaned out and Mrs Charles was put in a nursing home, a nice young couple, Michael and Kimberly Yaccus and their son Ben, bought the house and completely renovated it. They completely restored it keeping all of the original fixtures, lighting, hardwoods, windows, doors, built-ins, etc. They did update the kitchen though. They even replaced an old detached two car garage out back that contained Mr Charles 1930's model truck with all of his floor refinishing equipment still in it. A tree had fallen on the garage to the point it was beyond repair. So Michael removed it and built it back as a two stall carport with an enclosed bonus room above it. It sits in the exact same spot and looks exactly like the old garage except with open sides.

Today the house looks as beautiful as ever. Even though the Yaccus's sold it a couple of years ago, it is still very well maintained and looks like it could have just been built yesterday. This house is a true Oak Crest original both inside and out!
